Westowne Elementary School is involved in an exciting state-wide program called "Black Saga." The Black Saga Competition encourages students to learn about the African American experience and provides an exciting and fun-filled forum for students to show how much they know about this important part of American history. It also helps prepare students for their life experiences, helps students recognize the great richness of America's past through the lenses of history, geography, and economics, and teaches students how to work together. It also fosters parent involvement in their children's education.
Students involved in Black Saga are responsible for learning more than 800 trivia facts and then participate in a competition in January. The county competition is in February, and depending how the team performs, the team heads to the state competition in March.
The Black Saga team is open to 4th and 5th graders, and there is a rigorous qualifying exam to choose the team members. Look for more information in the weeks to come. Go Westowne!!
